SMART CONTROLS

Connect sensing, control and commissioning without losing the room intent

A control architecture should make device roles, fallback behavior and operational ownership visible from design through occupancy.

Choose the interface by behavior, topology and service model

Protocol names alone do not establish compatibility. Confirm device roles, power requirements, addressing limits and the party responsible for setup.

DALI-2

Addressable devices support granular grouping and status, but commissioning requires a clear instance and device plan. Replacement workflows must preserve addressing records.

Review: bus power, device count, emergency roles

0-10V

A familiar analog interface can be straightforward to troubleshoot. Low-end output depends on the driver and control pairing, and separate mains switching may be required.

Review: sink/source behavior, wiring class, minimum dim

DMX

Fast scene and color control suits theatrical or dynamic architectural work. Network layout, termination and show-control ownership need disciplined documentation.

Review: universe plan, refresh behavior, fallback scene

Wireless

Retrofit flexibility can reduce control wiring. Range is shaped by walls, metal construction and device placement, so representative-site testing matters.

Review: mesh paths, interference, battery service

A reproducible commissioning path

  1. 1

    Baseline

Record firmware or device revision, installed load, room condition and current settings.

  2. 2

    Address

Confirm device identity, group membership and response at each controlled circuit.

  3. 3

    Tune

Set occupied and unoccupied levels, daylight targets and timeout values in furnished rooms.

  4. 4

    Challenge

Test loss of network, sensor obstruction, manual override and restoration from power interruption.

  5. 5

    Handover

Export settings, exceptions, floor naming and a repeatable functional test sheet.

Metrics that reveal control behavior

15 minExample occupancy timeout to validate, not a universal default
1%Example dimming command increment for scene tuning
4 statesOccupied, vacant, daylight-limited and manual override checks
100%Named zones included in the turnover record
